The first ever fun day for junior badminton players in Mayo was held in the De La Salle Hall on Sunday October 16th and it was a huge success with over 65 players participating. They came from all over Mayo but clubs such as Westport, Glenhest, Newport, Ballina and host club Castlebar were particularly well represented. The format for the day was half court singles with every player being guaranteed at least four games as league groups of five were created. From these groups two players went forward to participate in the playoffs. Tickets were also distributed to all entrants as a raffle was to be held at the end for much prized badminton t-shirts donated by Tommy Hehir, Western Development Officer for Badminton Ireland.

There were some fantastic tussles during the day and some very close results with many players being put to the pin of their collars to achieve success. This is a unique facet of half court singles – it is very difficult to kill the shuttle and so great contests often emerge. Such was the success of this, our first fun singles competition, that we are hoping to run another before Christmas and we will be hoping for another big entry on that occasion.

The following were the results of the league playoffs on the day:

Group 1: Winner: John Martyn (Ballina)

                Runner Up: Barry O’Malley (Castlebar)
