Sligo Tennis Club, September 10th / 11th 2011

There were excellent performances by all the Connacht players at the first tournament of the season. Some of the players were just back after the summer break and were a bit rusty. It would be better if the tournament was a bit later in the season but the calendar is quite full and this is where we are slotted in. Numbers were down this year primarily because of the recession. There was a good turnout from Lisburn on Saturday and from Dublin on Sunday.

Parents in Dublin said it was too expensive travelling to Sligo. They have many tournaments in Dublin and Lisburn is only one hour up the motorway. A lot of under 15 players in Dublin played in the Ulster U17 the following week, however all went out in the first round.

On the playing front we had great performances by Connacht players. Irish U15 players Conor Scanlon and Danny Keown from Sligo won the U17 doubles. Only one top Irish pair was absent. Danny was in the singles final. Congratulations to the boys for winning the U17 doubles in the Ulster open last week. All the best Irish players were in this competition.

Sligo’s Fionnuala Scanlon won the U17 doubles playing with Victoria Ringland from Ulster. She is still under 15 and was in the final of the U15 singles and semi final in the doubles. James Poole from Mayo played with Leitrim’s John Finnegan. They did well reaching the semi final in a strong competition.

At the U15 level Ellie Dillane and Feena McManamon from Mayo played really well to reach the final.

There were great Connacht performances in the U13’s. Amy Gannon from Galway and Fiona Poole from Mayo were in the semi final of the doubles.

Galway player Jack Lawlor was in the semi final of the singles. Roscommon’s talented 11 year old Adam McAllister had a great tournament reaching two finals. He was in the final of the mixed playing with Megan Regan of Galway. Daniel Price Williams from Mayo played doubles with Adam and they were in the final.
