Despite the inclement weather, there was a good turnout of players in Sligo on Sunday last to compete in the Connacht U-13 and U-17 Closed Competition. There were some great games of badminton on the day with some fantastic skills displayed by the players from both age groups. Players from clubs across Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim and Roscommon attended on the day.

The U-13 Boys Singles was a tightly fought out group with Cian Feeney (Sligo) and Stephen Quigley (Sligo) making it to the final where Stephen won out. (21/9, 21/13) Likewise there were some good games in the U-13 Boys Doubles where Jack O’Brien (Ballina) and Nessin Leyden (Sligo) were the winners.

In the U-17 Girls singles, there were a good number of players who fought for the title ending in a final between Janie Fahey (Loughglynn) and Fionnuala Scanlon (Sligo) with Janie winning out in the end. Again in the U-17 Girls Doubles there were some closely contested games between the teams with the final between Elaine Finneren and Shauna Smith (Ballina) against Janie Fahey (Loughglynn) and Fionnuala Scanlon (Sligo). This was a closely contested match over three games with Janie and Fionnuala winning out in the end. (11/21, 21/17, 23/21)

The Boys U-17 Singles provided some fantastic games between great contestants from the start. The final was contested between David Walsh (Ballina) and Jonathon Dolan (Sligo). As hoped for, this produced a fantastic duel with Jonathon winning out in the end. (21/11, 21/11).
There was some interesting mixes in the U-17 Boys Doubles teams which produced some fascinating duels. This ended up in a final between Conor Scanlon (Sligo) and Danny Keown (Sligo) against Cian Scanlon (Sligo) and Jonathon Dolan (Sligo). Cian and Jonathon won out in the end in this close battle (21/18, 21/12).

In the U-17 Mixed Doubles, again there were some interesting teams in the mix which produced some excellent games which ended up in Cian and Fionnuala Scanlon (Sligo) against Janie Fahey (Loughglynn) and Josh Gallagher (Ballaghaderreen) in the final. This was a very tight game between these teams who put up a very entertaining game. Janie and Josh won out in the end. (21/19, 19/21, 21/15)

Well done to all the players who participated in these games and congratulations to all the above winners and the winners of the plate competitions. A big thanks to Paul, John and Vera for the excellent days sport. Well organised and ran as usual.
