John Dolan of Sligo sent in the following report and photos.

Last weekend in Sligo the finals of the Connacht Open were played over two days. Approximately 50 players took part from all over the country with Niall Tierney the current number 1 Singles player taking part from Mount Pleasant.

Sligo had 15 players participating with great success in various competitions. The increased level of success is down to the high performance coaching strategy that Sligo has developed with the support of the Sligo Sports Partnership under the direction of Deirdre Levin and the Badminton Ireland high performance coach Danny Magee who is assisted by John and Paul Dolan and Paula McDonogh in Ball mote and Green. The overall organisation of the tournament was carried out by Paul Dolan, tournament referee.

In the Mens Doubles Sligo had winners in Mark Dolan and Niall Tierney with Jonathon Dolan and David Walsh serving up a tight 3 setter with similar scores 21/17 in all 3 sets. This was a great performance as the lads are only 15 years of age but as we have come to expect Mark doesn’t lose many finals.

Niall Tierney won the Singles title against Jonathon Dolan 21/16, 21/12.

Paula McDonagh won the Ladies Singles in 2 sets defeating Audrey Delaney 21/14, 21/17 a great achievement.

The mixed was a family affair with Jonathon Dolan and Francie Mahon winning in the 2nd set against Padraic O’Dowd who picked up an injury with Audrey Delaney after defeating the fancied pair of Fintan Keown and Paula McDonagh in 3 sets.

In the girls Doubles we had good performances from Anne Flannigan and Laura Keown who have improved immensely this season and are certainly in contention for a place on the Senior Inter County Team in March 2010.

Paula McDonagh and Susan Stevenson won the Ladies Doubles against Audrey Delaney and Corrina Delaney, displaying true grit and determination throughout the competition.
