Great Connaught Win at Irish Underage Badminton Interpros 2009

The highlight of the year for all underage badminton players has to be the Interprovincials which are held at the Badminton Hall, Baldoyle in late spring every year. This year was no exception and the standard of badminton on display was of the highest quality. Connaught fielded teams at Under 13, Under 15 and Under 17 age groups, the players coming from Sligo, Leitrim, Ballina, Castlebar, Newport, Claregalway and Galway. Though it’s never easy for Connaught to compete at this level, it has to be said that all teams performed admirably with the Under 15 team in particular performing heroics and capturing a silver medal for our province for the first time ever. The Connaught coaches were delighted with this success and the progress in general that has been made in the county over the last number of years.

Coaching sessions were held on a regular basis in Sligo in preparation for this important event. The teams As with all great achievements, the preparation for this attempt at taking our first ever silver medal began several years ago. Over the last two to three years the boys and girls of the Connacht squads (Under 13, 15 and 17) have been attending coaching sessions, mostly in Sligo, organised by John Dolan (Sligo), Anthony Walsh (Ballina) and Therese O’Brien (Castlebar). The coaches involved over that time were Mervyn Fee, Donal O’Holloran and more recently Danny Magee. The teams benefited from the tutelage of the very best and the hard work paid off recently with two of the Under 15’s qualifying for the Irish team – Jonathon Dolan and David Walsh. This augured well for our Under 15 Connacht team, in particular, as they headed to Dublin. If ever there was a chance to attain a silver medal it had to be this time. This belief was instilled in the team, they were as good as any other team and we had to lose our Cinderella status! This we did at Under 15 level and came within a whisker of taking the gold.
