KEOWN & SCANLON U15 IRISH CHAMPIONS!!!

posted 25 Feb 2010 05:15 by Connacht Branch Badminton   [ updated 25 Feb 2010 09:59 ]

Connor Scanlon & Danny Keown put in a excellent performance last weekend claiming the U15 boys Doubles National Championships!

The Number 1 seeds for the tournament, continued their impressive season by adding the Nationals championships to the other 4 doubles tournaments they have won this year. They played brilliant throughout the tournament and hopefully this will give them a great chance of being selected for the Irish U15 National team.

Danny also had a 2 other semi finals in both singles and mixed, losing both in very close final sets.

A Huge congratulations to the Boys!

Jonathan Dolan produced a stunning performance to win the U17 UK Gold Boys singles in Lisburn. The young Sligo star played extremely well throughout the tournament, defeating some of the top players in the UK on his way to winning his 2nd Gold event of his young career.

Another great performance came from Ballina's David Walsh who reached the semi finals of the Boy's Doubles alongside Kieron Chambers from Ulster. They were really unlucky in the Semi final losing in the 3rd set 23/21 to the English 3/4 seeds Toby Moon & Tom Standford.

Success for Galway & Roscommon in Inter-County Class 4

posted 16 Feb 2010 14:24 by Connacht Branch Badminton

Speaking as a Galway player, our County team had immense success in the University of Limerick sports hall last Sunday. Galway won all games in their group to come out as group winners. The groups were as follows:

Group 1
Kerry
Galway
Limerick
Tipperary
Meath

Group 2
Waterford
Cork
Roscommon
Wexford
Sligo

Meath were runners-up to Galway, and Roscommon finished second to Waterford in the other group. The semi-finals will be contested at the end of March in GLTC, Galway. The line-up is:

Galway vs Roscommon
Waterford vs Meath

I don't have Roscommon's results, but Galway's were:

8-1 vs Kerry
7-2 vs Limerick
7-2 vs Tipperary
5-1 vs Meath (last two games not played as Galway had qualified as group winners and Meath as runners-up by this stage)

Roll on 27th/28th March !

Connacht Closed - Grade A Report

posted 1 Feb 2010 02:01 by Connacht Branch Badminton   [ updated 3 Feb 2010 16:28 ]

The Connacht Closed Championships (Grade A) took place on Saturday 30th January in Galway Lawn Tennis Club. The event saw the best badminton talent from across Connacht come together for a full day of Singles, Doubles and Mixed competitions. Starting at 10am and finishing up just before 9pm, 44 players took part and between them played nearly 100 matches. The honours were spread across the province - Galway took the Ladies Singles, Sligo took the Mens Singles and Mens Doubles, Roscommon were victorious in the Ladies Doubles and a Galway / Sligo pairing won out in the Mixed Doubles. A small Mayo contingent managed a runners-up medal in the Ladies Singles.

There were many stand-out matches played, but the highlights were perhaps the Mens Singles and Mens Doubles finals. Both resulted in victories for Fintan Keown of Sligo Tennis Club, along with his partner Graeme Watt in the doubles, in two incredibly close games. In the Singles, Damian Hehir of GLTC had a 17-13 and 20-17 lead in the final set, but lost out to the Sligo man 23-21 in the decider. In the doubles, Mark Dolan and Joseph Keown brilliantly staged multiple comebacks in the 3rd set, reversing 10-3 and 15-12 deficits to take the final set to a nail-biting score of 18-18, before Fintan and Graeme clinched it. Fintan and his partner Catriona Farrell of Cortoon also took the Mixed Doubles, narrowly overcoming Bryan & Emer Lalor of GLTC in the final. And in the Ladies Doubles, Strokestown pairing Corina & Audrey Delaney were too strong for the GLTC pairing of Helen Sheehan and Claire Kenny, taking the final in straight sets. However, earlier in the day, Helen Sheehan won the Ladies Singles against a very promising Aine Leneghan from Newport in Mayo.

The semi-finals and finals are all listed below, and for a full round-up of all matches, see the attached spreadsheet (Connacht scoresheet.xlsx). Full-size photos attached (Finalists.zip and General.zip in the attachments), thumbnails at the bottom.
